2008 Rules & Regulations

Please read carefully!

* There are two misprints in our current brochure. The first being the age cutoff and the second being the new scoring levels.

 Failure to comply with these rules may result in deductions or disqualification.

1.  Entries must be postmarked 30 days before regional competition dates.  Entries postmarked after that date must be sent Express Mail or fax and must include Visa or MasterCard number as form of payment.  Entries are accepted on a first-come first-serve basis, and are limited to the amount of performance time available. 

             

2.  There will be a $25.00 service charge for all checks returned by the bank.  If the bank has returned a check, all future entries or purchases must be made by money order or cashier’s check.  If payment has not been received on a returned check by the competition date, contestant(s) will not be permitted to perform.

3.  A tentative time schedule will be sent to you a week before the competition date.  If you cannot perform at your scheduled time due to costume change, prior arrangements must be made so that you may perform without penalty.  We usually run on or ahead of schedule.  Please be prepared at least 1 hour before your scheduled time.

4.  Names, ages and birth dates of all contestants must appear on the entry form or it will not be accepted.  Contestants will be responsible for producing proof of age should any questions arise.  Failure to do so may result in disqualification and forfeiture of awards.

5.  Entry fees are non-refundable.  A 50% refund may be obtained with proof of medical reasons.

6.  All contestants must furnish their own music on a single track CD.  An iPod can also be used.  Please call us for details on how to set up your iPod.  A good quality cassette tape is also permitted.  All music must be labeled with the contestant name and number and all cassette tapes must be cued and ready to start.

7.  Fire, swords, knives and live animals are strictly prohibited on stage and at all venues.  No special scenery, lighting, smoke, dry ice or electrical devices may be used.  Contestants are responsible for getting props on and off stage as quickly as possible. 

8.  All routines must be appropriate for family viewing.  Anything deemed by our judges to be inappropriate for a family audience will be scored lower.

9.  Any dancer participating in a Thunderstruck Dance event is understood to recognize the risks inherent in dance and dance performances.  Participation in this conventions/competition indicates the acceptance of such risks by contestants and their parents/guardians.  Thunderstruck Dance Productions assumes no responsibility for personal injury or property loss at these events.

10.  Choreographers, teachers and performers automatically grant permission to Thunderstruck Dance Productions to use their photos for publicity purposes, including ads, television, videotaping and film broadcasting in connection with promotional campaigns.

11.  For safety measures, all props (free standing or hand held) are restricted to a maximum height of 10 feet. In addition, a dancer may not stand above 6 feet. The use of safety railings may be used; however, the total prop height with railings may not exceed 10 feet.

12. Not more than 50% of any duet/trio or group may be the same and compete against themselves in the same age group of the same category.

13. No form of liquid, gel, aerosol, glitter, etc. may be used that would affect the dancing surface.

14. No camera of ANY KIND is allowed during a performance.

AGE DIVISIONS

Petite: 8 and Under
Junior: 9-11 years
Teen: 12-14 years
Senior: 15-19 years
Adult*: 20+ (Adult Category-see note below)

Age Cut Off: January 1st, 2008 (All ages are determined using this date)

Average Age: Round down or drop decimal

Adult Category:
Any performer 20 years or older dancing in any solo, duet/trio or group is NOT eligible for the High Point and is considered to be in the Adult division. Adult division will include Teacher, Pro, Parent, etc. Routines in the Adult division will not be used in determining the winner of the cruise.

Bump Rule:
Duet/Trios or Groups including dancers of different age divisions will compete no more than one age division younger than the oldest dancer, regardless of average age. For example: if a group includes a dancer age 16 (senior) and the average age is 11 (junior), the group will compete one level above junior – age 12 (teen). 

Novice Rule:

You may enter any routine in our “Novice” Division for dancers that have competed less than 2 years.  They will be scored on a novice level.  The Petite category is not divided into the Novice and Lightning divisions.  They compete under Petite only.   

 

CATEGORY GUIDELINES

Contestants may enter as many categories as desired, but each routine must be different.  The same contestants cannot compete more than once in the same category and age group in the solo category.

Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Pointe, Lyrical/Modern, and Clogging cannot have any acrobatic tricks.

Tricks that are not allowed are movements that pass through or stop at a fully inverted (upside down position) with both feet off of the floor (the torso passing or stopping directly over the top of one’s head/shoulders). The only exceptions to this are forward, backward and shoulder rolls, and acrobatic tricks in lifts (a lift being defined as being supported by another dancer with any body part).

BALLET – Routine must consist of ballet technique movements and classical steps.

POINTE – Dance consisting of ballet technique combined with the use of Pointe shoes.

LYRICAL/MODERN – Routine should demonstrate balance, extension, isolations and control using contemporary lyrical and modern styles. No tumbling passes.

JAZZ – Routine must consist primarily of jazz technique.

TAP – Routine must consist primarily of tap technique.  No tap sounds are permitted on the music.

CLOGGING – A routine must contain clogging style and technique.

ACROBATIC DANCE – A routine demonstrating controlled moves incorporated with music.  The majority of the routine must consist of acrobatic moves. 

HIP-HOP – Routine must consist primarily of hip-hop technique.

MUSICAL THEATER – Must incorporate some form of dance and either singing, acting, or portraying a character.

CHARACTER – Any form of dance portraying a known personality from stage, television or film.

VOCAL – Routine may be any type of vocal presentation showing range, pitch, style and timing.  Accompaniment must be on CD or tape.  No voices on the CD or tape.  One microphone (with cord) will be provided.  No equipment may be hooked into Thunderstruck Dance sound system.

SONG & DANCE- Any form of dance combined with vocals. Must contain minimum 50% dance.

OPEN – Any routine that combines multiple styles and categories.

PRODUCTION – Must have a minimum of 20 dancers, incorporating any style(s) of dance. Tricks are allowed in productions.

 

SCORING AND AWARDS

Our panel will consist of 3 highly qualified judges.  Each judge will score to a maximum of 100 points.

285-300 “Lightning Gold”

268.6-284 Gold

260-268.5 High Silver

240-259 Silver

210-239 Bronze 

One trophy will be awarded to all solos, duo/trios, and groups for their adjudication.

Each routine will receive all three judges score sheets with critiques.

In every age division and group size that we have three or more entries, up to ten overall

placements will be announced. 

We always announce all top placements for Lines and Productions.
